Il existe plus de 300 fermes en Afrique du Sud où les lions sont gardés dans des cages pour l'industrie de la chasse. Cette activité, qui est légale, est appelée "canned hunting" (chasse en conserve). Le soi-disant "chasseur" achète son lion, qui est placé dans un enclos sans possibilité de s'échapper. Le chasseur tire sur le lion à bout portant. Parfois, le lion est drogué pour le rendre plus docile. Une "chasse en boîte" coûte beaucoup moins cher qu'une chasse traditionnelle et garantit au "chasseur" un taux de réussite de 100 % !
